With Latest Sanctions, U.S. Targets 30 Percent of Russia’s Bank Assets

With the blacklisting of three Russian financial institutions Tuesday, the United States has targeted nearly a third of the assets controlled by the federation's banking sector, according to a senior U.S. official. The latest measures bar U.S. financial institutions from financing the Bank of Moscow, Russian Agricultural Bank and VTB Bank OAO with equity or debt that matures in more than 90 days. The sanctions do not require financial institutions to block the assets of the Russian banks, as they must for United Shipbuilding Corporation, a fourth sanctions target disclosed Tuesday.
