AML Penalties, Human Trafficking Reports Spike in Canada

Fines assessed by the Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre of Canada from April 2021 through March 2022 more than tripled the combined value of those levied during the previous 12 months, the agency disclosed in an annual report Thursday. The agency, also known as Fintrac, issued 15 notices of violation in the fiscal year that concluded March 31, including eight to real estate firms, four to banks, two to money services businesses and one to a precious metals dealer for nearly $3.5 million in total penalties, beating the prior year's tally of nine notices for $950,000.
