Appellate Court Reverses Six Convictions in Landmark Laundering Case

A San Francisco appellate court Friday reversed six of the 14 convictions against former Ukraine Prime Minister Pavel Lazarenko, and ordered a new sentencing in what is widely seen as a landmark money laundering case. The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals vacated five convictions for wire fraud and one count of transporting stolen property, but upheld eight counts of money laundering against Lazarenko. The former Ukrainian leader was sentenced to nine years in federal prison and fined $10 million in 2006 over his role in an extortion scheme that netted hundreds of millions of dollars in profit.
