Cyber-Heists Point to Need for ‘Real-Time’ Identification of Crime: Former Prosecutor

At least 12 financial institutions are investigating suspected compromises of the interbank messaging platforms they use to resolve institutional payments, according to Edward McAndrew, a former federal cybercrime prosecutor. The investigations come amid revelations that cybercriminals stole $81 million from an account held at the U.S. Federal Reserve for Bangladesh Bank by exploiting the Bangladeshi institution's access to the messaging platform maintained by the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication, or Swift.
