EU Considers Catch-All, Asset-Ownership Database

EU officials are studying the feasibility of building a central registry that would potentially list the names of individuals and entities who own real estate, cryptocurrency, gold, works of art and other assets anywhere in the European Union's 27 nations. The European Commission, which functions as the EU's executive branch, discreetly published a call for tenders last month for constructing and maintaining the potential database "in the context of the fight against AML [anti-money laundering] and tax evasion." According to the call, the EU wants to explore "how to collect and link information available from various sources on asset ownership"...
