EU Nations Push Ahead with AML Reform, Fail to Agree on Broader Regulatory Overhaul

EU ministers agreed Tuesday to give the European Banking Authority, or EBA, more power to harmonize anti-money laundering controls in the European Union but stalled on other planned financial reforms, including proposals designed to ensure financial stability and better oversight. Despite calls from the European Commission, France, Germany and other large EU nations to continue working towards a broader overhaul of financial supervision, most nations backed a bid by Romania, which holds the presidency of the European Council, to begin negotiations with the European Parliament on AML reform alone.
