European Financial Intelligence Chiefs Seek More Interbank Wire-Transfer Data

The heads of France, Belgium and Europol’s financial intelligence units in a hearing Thursday renewed calls for the European Union to develop its own bloc-wide system to scan payment instructions for signs of terrorist financing. Under the current Terrorist Finance Tracking Program, of TFTP, U.S. officials help European investigators identify suspicious payments to and from the European Union by reviewing data administered by the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication, or Swift, but cannot do the same for wires that occur entirely within the Single Euro Payments Area.
