Healthcare Expansion May Mean More Fraud, Compliance Risk

Healthcare entitlement programs set to grow under legislation passed in March may have the unintended consequence of expanding related fraud and money laundering, say former U.S. investigators. The two healthcare reform bills signed into law on March 23 and March 30 contain nearly a dozen measures among their nearly 1,000 pages aimed at curbing healthcare fraud in Medicaid and Medicare. Under the new laws, Medicaid spending is projected to increase by $434 billion over the next decade, while Medicare spending is forecasted to drop slightly.
