Industrial Loan Co. Legislation Faces Challenges in U.S. Senate

A bill introduced in the Senate Banking Committee Thursday that would prohibit commercial firms from creating or owning industrial loan companies faces an uphill battle in the full Senate, banking lawyers and consultants say. The measure, introduced by Sens. Sherrod Brown and Wayne Allard, is similar to a bill approved by the House Financial Services Committee in early May. The measure also extends the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp.'s authority to oversee parents of existing ILCs, which are state chartered, FDIC-insured financial firms.
