Internet Gambling Bill Likely to Clear House, Face Resistance in the Senate

A bill that would legalize Internet gambling within the United States through licenses issued by the Treasury Department will likely be approved by the House of Representatives, say analysts. The Internet Gambling and Consumer Protection Act, introduced by House Financial Services Committee Chairman Barney Frank (D-MA) in May and considered by lawmakers in a hearing Thursday, would shield financial institutions from liability, in some cases, under a 2006 law that prohibited banks from processing transactions tied to online gambling.
