Iran’s Relationship with Argentina Raises Compliance Concerns Abroad

Growing economic and political ties between Argentina and Iran are prompting some bank compliance officers to look more closely at their clients in the South American nation, say industry professionals. The concerns stem from allegations that Iran successfully pressured Argentina to forbid General Prosecutor Alberto Nisman from testifying before members of the U.S. House of Representatives earlier this month on his findings that Iran, through the blacklisted Shiite group Hezbollah, was directly responsible for the 1994 bombing of the Argentine Israelite Mutual Association (AMIA).
