Maryland Lawmakers Seek to Strengthen State AML Laws

Maryland lawmakers have introduced a bill to strengthen anti-money laundering laws they say have attracted drug dealers and other criminals to the state. Since 1990, criminals have taken advantage of a Maryland law that makes it a felony to launder $10,000 or more that is related to narcotics trafficking, according to Sgt. Chris Sakala of the Montgomery County Police Department in Maryland. The threshold amount is the highest for any felony money laundering charge nationwide, and fails to address other crimes, he said.
