OFAC Tags Bitcoin Processor for Handling North Korean, Iranian Funds

A cryptocurrency payments processor based in Atlanta must pay more than $500,000 in penalties after handling transactions for individuals in Cuba, Iran, North Korea and other blacklisted jurisdictions. BitPay, which began operations in 2011 and whose co-founder, Anthony Gallippi, testified at a U.S. Senate hearing on cryptocurrency in 2013, processed more than 2,100 such transfers from June 2013 to September 2018, in a case that the Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control, or OFAC, described Thursday as "non-egregious."
