Puerto Rican Senator Indicted for Extortion, Laundering

A U.S. federal grand jury has indicted a senator from Puerto Rico for extorting payments from local and foreign businessmen and laundering the illegal profits through a business run by one of his aides. The grand jury in the District of Puerto Rico indicted Puerto Rican Senator Jorge de Castro Font with 32 counts of honest services fraud, conspiracy to commit extortion, bribery and money laundering, for an alleged scheme that prosecutors said reaped between $500,000 and $525,000 for de Castro Font, who was elected to the Puerto Rican Senate in 2004.
