Senate Panel Greenlights TFI Deputy’s Nomination
The Senate Banking Committee approved Jonathan Burke to serve as assistant secretary of the Treasury Department’s Office of Terrorism and Financial Intelligence, or TFI, on Tuesday, largely along partisan lines.
Members voted 15-9 to move Burke’s nomination to the full Senate, with Mark Warner (D-VA) and Raphael Warnock (D-GA) breaking with their Democratic colleagues in backing the career financial professional, a senior policy advisor at TFI from 2008 to 2012 who has served as global head of sanctions compliance at Citi in London since December 2023.
“Mr. Burke couldn’t even acknowledge that Russia started the war against Ukraine,” the panel’s ranking member, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), said Tuesday. “How can he be counted on to coordinate our sanctions against Russia?”
Tuesday’s vote comes two months after the Senate approved John Hurley to lead TFI, which encompasses the Office of Terrorist Financing and Financial Crimes, Office of Intelligence and Analysis, Office of Asset Forfeiture, Office of Foreign Assets Control and Financial Crimes Enforcement Network.
