U.S. Should Ramp Up Caribbean AML Efforts, Pass Legislation, Says Senate Caucus

U.S. lawmakers Thursday called for funding to combat money laundering in the Caribbean and the passage of legislation meant to strengthen American anti-money laundering laws. In a 40-page report, members of the Senate Caucus on International Narcotics Control said expanding the presence of American law enforcement agents in Havana, Cuba and authorizing case-specific investigatory cooperation with Cuban agencies "would be particularly useful" to efforts to interdict billions of dollars of laundered drug profits. U.S. officials should also determine whether U.S.-vetted, local law enforcement personnel, called Sensitive Investigative Units (SIUs), should be tapped throughout the Caribbean region to help American agencies...
