US Lawmakers Question Efficacy of Sanctions Against Iran

Sanctions imposed on Iran in the 18 months since the U.S. withdrew from a global nuclear accord have curbed the country's funding of Hezbollah and other militant groups blacklisted as terrorist organizations, a senior official said Wednesday. Brian Hook, the U.S. special representative for Iran, told the Senate Banking Committee in a hearing that after four consecutive years of growth, Iran's military expenditures fell nearly 10 percent in 2018 as a direct result of the increasingly restrictive U.S. economic embargo against the Islamic Republic.
