US Regulators Urge Banks to Reconsider Their Approach Towards Nonprofits

Federal regulators advised lenders Thursday to vet charities seeking access to banking services in a manner that corresponds with the unique set of risks each organization presents instead of refraining from dealing with the nonprofit sector altogether. The customer due-diligence rule that since April 2018 has required banks to identify the true owners and managers of the legal entities they serve does not single out charities and other nonprofit organizations, or NPOs, for enhanced review, federal banking agencies and the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network, or FinCEN, noted in a statement Thursday.
