U.S. Court Orders OFAC to Release Complaints from Victims of Sanctions Policies

A federal court has ordered the U.S. Treasury Department to release e-mails and letters from individuals complaining that they have been unfairly ensnared by targeted financial sanctions. The Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights, an advocacy group in San Francisco, asked the Treasury Department to explain how it protects the civil rights of people with similar names to individuals identified as terrorists and drug traffickers. The committee sued the Treasury Department in 2007, claiming it didn't adequately respond to the formal information request.
