Switzerland’s 12-Year Probe of Salinas Ends With $74 Million Payment to Mexico

Swiss authorities agreed to release over $74 million in assets tied to the brother of Mexico's former president Carlos Salinas de Gortari to the Mexican government, the Swiss Justice Ministry said Wednesday. The payment concludes proceedings that began in 1995 when Switzerland froze an estimated $110 million linked to Raul Salinas on the ground the money was the laundered proceeds of drug trafficking. Mexico is currently conducting its own investigation of Raul Salinas in connection with money laundering and the embezzlement of public funds, the Swiss Justice Ministry stated in a press release.
