Staffing Costs Are Bulk of AML Compliance Expenditures: Survey

Banks spent an average of 63 percent of their entire compliance budget on internal staff in the second fiscal quarter of 2008, according to survey released Wednesday. Of the remaining money spent on anti-money laundering (AML) compliance, banks spent 31 percent on technology and six percent on external consultants, according to Boston-based consultancy Aite Group LLC. The company surveyed 17 banks, including two Canadian banks in the second fiscal quarter of 2008. Overall, AML costs are on the rise, according to the company, which said 60 percent of respondents planned to "definitely" implement new technology in the next 24 months...
