Two Years After Report, FBI Has Yet to Correct Subpoena Problems: OIG

The FBI has yet to resolve problems with how it uses special subpoena authorities granted under the Patriot Act, according to the U.S. Justice Department's Inspector General. The head of the federal watchdog said in a March 2007 report that the FBI misused the emergency subpoenas, known as national security letters (NSLs), by requesting them for standard investigations and retaining excessive information that was mistakenly reported. Former FBI Director Robert Mueller said later that month that the bureau was overhauling how it tracked the requested data.
