House Committee Passes Sunset Bill for NSL Powers

A U.S. House of Representatives panel approved a measure Thursday that would impose an expiration date on the availability of emergency subpoenas used to obtain telephone and financial data. The new measure, passed by the House Judiciary Committee in a vote of 16-10, would end the special use of national security letters (NSLs) granted under the U.S. Patriot Act by Dec. 31, 2013. The subpoenas allow investigators to obtain bank, telephone and e-mail records in urgent terrorist investigations without the approval of a federal judge. The bill, introduced by Rep.
