Cable Leak Shows U.S. Concerns Over Mexico’s Companies, Politicians

Mexican drug traffickers are likely laundering some of their profits in the country's casinos and nightclubs, as well as in campaign funds for political candidates, according to a leaked U.S. diplomatic communiqué . Despite precautions, it would be "practically impossible to prevent organized crime from bankrolling [Mexican] candidates" in upcoming state and municipal elections, according to a January 2009 U.S. State Department cable from the U.S. consulate in Monterrey, leaked by Wikileaks.org late last month.
