U.S. Froze $77 Million in Syrian Assets in 2011

The U.S. Treasury Department last year froze $77 million in assets tied to the Syrian government under sanctions against state sponsors of terrorism, according to a report published Wednesday. All together, the department's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) last year blocked $89 million in assets tied to four nations deemed by the U.S. State Department to be sponsors of terrorism. The rise brought the total blocked funds belonging to the countries to $399 million, a 22 percent increase from 2010's total.
