EU Officials Consider Stronger Asset Seizure Directive

The European Union's executive branch wants the bloc's 27 nations to seize more assets from criminals over the next four years, and consider adopting measures for freezing and ultimately confiscating potentially illicit wealth from suspects even without a conviction. A 60-page roadmap unveiled by the European Commission on Wednesday includes proposals for clamping down on environmental violations, combating the trafficking of cultural goods, facilitating exchanges of evidence within the EU as well as with neighboring countries, and targeting income all but proven to have originated from crime.
