House Lawmakers Clear Way to Blacklist Venezuelan Officials

The U.S. House of Representatives passed a measure Wednesday clearing the way for financial sanctions against Venezuelan officials implicated in the country's violent crackdown on antigovernment demonstrators. In a voice vote, the lawmakers approved the Venezuelan Defense of Human Rights and Civil Society Act of 2014, a measure that would empower the White House to block the assets and prohibit property transactions of designated Venezuelans and those who may have provided them with material support.
