Competition for EU’s New AML Agency Heats Up

Ireland has pledged €80 million in funding to host the Anti-Money Laundering Authority, the EU's impending, bloc-wide AML regulator, far exceeding what any of the other eight nations now vying for the agency have set aside. Belgium, Germany, Spain, France, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania and Austria joined Ireland last year in applying to host the agency, also known as the AMLA, which from 2026 onwards will directly supervise 40 high-risk, cross-border financial institutions, monitor AML supervision by national regulators and serve as a hub of financial intelligence across the EU.
