Developing Nations Lost $1.26 Trillion to Financial Crimes in 2008: Report

Developing countries lost up to $810 billion per year to potential corruption between 2000 and 2008, according to estimates by a Washington, D.C.-based advocacy group published Tuesday. Suspect outflows of illicit funds, largely attributable to trade mispricing, bribery, kickbacks and tax evasion, rose by 12.7 percent during the nine year period when adjusted for inflation, according to a report by Global Financial Integrity (GFI). The outflows reached $1.26 billion in 2008, a nearly 19 percent rise from the 2006 total, said the group.
