EU Bans Cryptocurrency Firms from Serving Russian Customers

The EU banned cryptocurrency firms in the bloc from serving Russian nationals and residents on Thursday as part of an eighth package of sanctions against Russia, days after Moscow illegally annexed Ukraine’s Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions.

In a statement, the European Council, which represents the bloc’s 27 member states, disclosed several “biting measures,” including a price cap on Russian oil sales to cut off the Kremlin’s war chest, new trade embargoes, as well as designations of individuals and entities involved in sham referenda on joining Russia in the four Ukrainian regions.

The Council also broadened the grounds for designating individuals and entities “to target those who facilitate the circumvention of EU sanctions,” but provided no details in the statement. EU sanctions imposed in April already capped cryptocurrency deposits by Russians nationals and residents at €10,000.
