Europol Highlights Cryptocurrency’s Role in Global Money Laundering Schemes

European investigators are fighting an uphill battle against cryptocurrency-enabled illicit finance, Europol warned in a report Monday. Despite the EU's efforts to reign them in with law enforcement and stronger, clearer regulation and supervision, according to Europol, cryptocurrency exchanges have come to play a "key role" in transnational money-laundering schemes and a "parallel, underground financial system" through which a larger share of illicit funds now move. "Criminal synergies are growing between online and offline spaces," Europol noted in the 58-page report.
