Justice Department Considers Legal Tool to Seize Assets That Can’t Be Sourced

The U.S. government is reviewing how other countries have used a rare legal tool to seize money and property from suspicious individuals who can't justify how they acquired the assets. Earlier this year, officials from the U.S. Justice Department visited Ireland to discuss the use of unexplained wealth orders, a type of subpoena that allows courts to freeze the assets of suspicious individuals who can't explain where their money comes from.
