Mexican President Weaponized FIU Against Political Opposition, Former Official Claims

A former senior official at Mexico's financial intelligence unit, Unidad de Inteligencia Financiera, or UIF, alleged in a video recording presented to reporters in Mexico City last month that President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador used the agency to target a political opponent. The recording, captured by a private investigation firm hired by the legal defense of Javier Garcia Cabeza de Vaca, a former governor of Tamaulipas who fled Mexico before his term ended last year, shows former UIF Deputy Director Carlos Monroy alleging that his boss at the agency, Santiago Nieto, ordered Cabeza de Vaca's accounts frozen at Obrador's request...
