Retailers Should Meet National Data Security Standards, Task Force Says

The data security requirements shouldered by banks should apply to all companies, a federal task force set up to help combat identity theft said. The President's Identity Theft Task Force, an interagency group formed in May 2006, also recommended Monday that government agencies limit their use of Social Security numbers and companies develop better methods for verifying customer identities. The recommendations follow interim proposals issued in November. Banks are required under the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act to protect customers' personal data and also must inform consumers when their data has been compromised.
