President Donald Trump has nominated John Hurley, an asset manager and lecturer at Stanford University, to lead the Treasury Department’s Office of Terrorism and Financial Intelligence, or TFI, the White House announced Thursday.
Hurley, a U.S. Army veteran awarded the Bronze Star during the Gulf War, previously served on Trump’s Intelligence Advisory Board and currently holds leadership roles at several conservative thinktanks, including the American Enterprise Institute. At TFI, Hurley will lead the Office of Terrorist Financing and Financial Crimes, Office of Intelligence and Analysis, Office of Asset Forfeiture, Office of Foreign Assets Control and Financial Crimes Enforcement Network.
He replaces Brad Smith, who has led TFI in an acting capacity following Brian Nelson’s resignation in August 2024.
Smith and Nelson, a Biden-era appointee, oversaw federal efforts to develop an unprecedently robust banking embargo of Russia, track the finances of fentanyl trafficking, require legal entities to declare their beneficial owners and expand anti-money laundering obligations to new areas of the economy.
