The United States and Britain on Thursday jointly designated seven Russia-based cybercriminals linked to a ransomware gang suspected of extorting schools, hospitals, local authorities and businesses in the U.K. to the tune of £27 million.
The sanctions, which are the U.K.’s first cybercrime-related designations, target suspected former members of the notorious Conti Group, which disbanded last year but whose associates continue to perpetrate “some of the most notorious new ransomware strains that dominate and threaten U.K. security,” the National Crime Agency said in a statement.
The U.S. Office of Foreign Assets Control on Thursday simultaneously disclosed the designations, which follow a joint investigation by OFAC, the NCA and HM Treasury against the gang, which is responsible for the Trickbot malware and Conti and RYUK ransomware strains.
