British Proposals for Unilateral Sanctions Remain Unclear: Analysts

British lawmakers on Wednesday disclosed general plans for wielding an independent sanctions regime after the United Kingdom exits the European Union, but did not answer questions concerning the eventual scope of the restrictions and authority for enforcing them. The International Sanctions Bill, one of eight proposed laws announced Wednesday in Parliament to address the United Kingdom's departure from the bloc in 2019, will set up a "new, sovereign U.K. framework" for levying U.N. and nationally mandated asset freezes, travel bans and trade restrictions against individuals and entities at home or overseas.
