Former Mexican Governor Faces U.S. Extradition on Drug, Laundering Charges

The arrest of a former Mexican governor for possible extradition to the United States refocuses attention on a case that U.S. prosecutors say involves the laundering of millions of dollars in drug cartel money with the aid of a Lehman Brothers broker. Mexican authorities took Mario Villanueva Madrid into custody June 21 as he left prison after completing a six-year sentence on a money laundering conviction. Villanueva, the former mayor of Mexico's Quintana Roo state, is wanted in New York on drug trafficking, money laundering and racketeering charges.
