Online Markets Fueling Check Fraud, Research Shows

Recent years have seen the use of high-quality scanners, printers and fake IDs amid an epidemic of mail theft revolutionize the age-old scam of creating and cashing counterfeit checks, while online fraud-as-a-service markets have newly enabled criminals to scale-up to enterprise levels. In September, for example, state prosecutors in Minnesota accused a 21-year-old Minneapolis resident of leading a now-dismantled fraud ring that allegedly deposited more than $400,000 in counterfeit checks in only eight months.
