In Calls for Sanctions on Iran and Syria, Lawmakers Ratchet Up Pressure on White House

Caught between pressure from U.S. lawmakers to crack down harder on Iran and Syria and the desire to act in concert with America's allies, the White House is walking a fine line in its use of economic sanctions, say analysts. In a letter Tuesday, 92 senators called on the Obama administration to blacklist Iran's central bank, or Bank Markazi, for its alleged role in helping Iranian financial institutions circumvent international sanctions. The letter was preceded by another sent nearly a week earlier, by sixty-eight of the lawmakers, asking the White House to impose unspecified financial restrictions on the Syrian government....
