UIGEA Extension, Repeal Unlikely Before June Enforcement Deadline

An online gambling ban that requires banks to monitor for illegal transactions is unlikely to be overturned before a June 1 enforcement deadline, despite congressional efforts to repeal the law. On Wednesday, the House Ways and Means Committee debated a bill by Jim McDermott (D-WA) that would tax online gambling firms and effectively overturn the 2006 Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA). Under the law, passed in October 2006, banks must block transactions associated with online betting sites.
